New Era Downwind Sail Design: The 1D Sails Approach

From the wind tunnel experiments of the “good old Tornado times” to today’s high-resolution simulations, we’ve built a foundation of knowledge that ensures our designs are both innovative and grounded in proven techniques. How we analyze downwind performance

1. Comprehensive CFD Simulations

We harness the power of advanced Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) tools to simulate the performance of our sails. These tools allow us to model the intricate flow interactions over sails in real-world conditions, capturing the effects of apparent wind angle, speed, and sail trim.

2. High-resolution meshes for accuracy

We use high-resolution grids to capture every aerodynamic detail. This precision is critical for optimizing the performance of deep sails like asymmetric spinnakers, where the interplay of separated flow and pressure distribution determines efficiency.

3. Iterative design and testing

Designing a winning sail involves more than just one simulation. We test and refine multiple shapes, trims, and configurations to ensure measurable performance improvements. Each design is validated against a baseline to deliver the best possible results.

4. Real-world buildability

One of the most challenging aspects of our process is ensuring that the flying shape of the sail in our analysis is replicable in reality. This step is crucial—no matter how optimized a design is in simulation, it must maintain its shape and properties when built and used on the water. We prioritize precise construction techniques and material behavior to guarantee that our sails match their designed performance.
