The International Formula 18 Class Association has recently addressed concerns about sailcloth availability, specifically regarding Pentex, the traditional fabric used for F18 sails. Following temporary supply disruptions and long-term durability questions, the Association began actively exploring and testing alternative materials.
Although the availability of Pentex has improved, the Class Association remains committed to thoroughly evaluating new fabrics. The aim is to ensure that any alternative meets or exceeds existing standards for performance, durability, consistency, and cost-effectiveness. Comprehensive testing procedures are ongoing, involving key sailmakers and sailors to ensure the most accurate and relevant outcomes.
Importantly, any approved changes in sailcloth materials will be carefully managed, and implementation will be strategically planned. The Association emphasizes that no official modifications will occur before the 2026 F18 World Championship scheduled in Australia. This extended timeline ensures that sailors, sailmakers, and manufacturers have ample time to adapt and prepare, ensuring minimal disruption to competition.
